INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE WORKSHOP “REINDEER HUSBANDRY IN A CIRCUMPOLAR PERSPECTIVE”, KAUTOKEINO, NORWAY, 26-27 APRIL 2002

The project “Sustainable Reindeer Husbandry” was approved by the Arctic Council as a project under the Sustainable Development Programme at the ministerial meeting in Barrow, Alaska, in 2000. The aim of the project is to assess circumpolar reindeer herding and husbandry in relation to economic and social/cultural sustainability. This will be done by carrying out a thematic survey and assessment of reindeer husbandry in the Arctic region (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Alaska and Russia).

So far Norway, Finland and Russia are represented in the steering committee. Other countries that are actively involved in the project are also invited to join the steering committee.

The project will foster a better understanding of the industry’s needs and explore ways to meet future challenges. It will identify areas where there is a need for action and international cooperation. The results will be made public and distributed to members, permanent participants and observers of the Arctic Council, as well as reindeer herders, educational institutions, etc.

The final report, which will be presented to the ministerial meeting in Finland in October 2002, will discuss the main challenges linked with the sustainable development of reindeer herding communities, and recommend measures that can be taken by the industry, national authorities, and the Arctic Council.

The “Sustainable Reindeer Husbandry” project will, in cooperation with the Nordic Sami Institute in Kautokeino and the Association of World Reindeer Herders, organise a workshop entitled “Reindeer Husbandry in a Circumpolar Perspective”, which will take place in Kautokeino, Norway, on 26-27 April , 2002.

The overall theme of the workshop will be the respective countries’ national legislation concerning the socio-economic development of reindeer husbandry in the circumpolar area. There will be a special focus on the situation of the industry in Russia and the new reindeer husbandry legislation being proposed in Norway and Sweden.

Speakers from Norway, Russia, Sweden, Finland and Alaska have been invited to make presentations concerning legislation and the socio-economic development of reindeer husbandry in these countries (see the attached programme for more detailed information).
