Sustainable Reindeer Husbandry Objectives

The ``Sustainable Reindeer Husbandry'' was approved by the Arctic Council as a project under the ``Sustainable Development Program'' at the Ministerial meeting in Barrow, Alaska 2000. So far Norway and Russia are represented in the steering committee. Other countries with an active involvement in the project are invited to join the steering committee.

The aim of the project is to assess circumpolar reindeer herding in relation to economic and social/cultural sustainability. This will be done by carrying out a thematic survey and assessment of reindeer husbandry in the arctic region of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia and Alaska.

The major objectives of the project are:
· Describe and analyse the present situation with regard to economic and social conditions;
· Describe and analyse the present situation with regard to national management of reindeer husbandry; and
· Describe and analyse the present situation with regard to current legal status in reindeer husbandry.

Organisational structure
No changes in the organisational structure.

Collection of data
No changes in the collections of data.

Time schedule
No changes in the time schedule in the project. By October 1st the project has made fieldtrips in Yamal-Nenets Okrug, Kola Oblast and Yakutia in Russia; Anchorage, St.Paul Island and Seward Peninsula in Alaska and Nordland County in Norway.

After October 1st we will continue our work in Chukotka in Russia, Finland, Sweden and Norway. The main collection of information will be done by February 1st.2002. In the spring of 2002 an international workshop will be held in Kautokeino, Norway (Kautokeino 2).

Presentation on the ministerial meeting
The project period is until 31 December 2002, but the project will present the main report on the Ministerial meeting in Finland 2002.

It is the intention to present concrete steps for follow-up actions for political discussions at the Ministerial meeting. The aim is to make recommendations to the Arctic Council that can improve the conditions for circumpolar reindeer husbandry.
